When Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Texas coastline, the historic Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in the small community of Shiner, TX, received significant damage to the church structure, nuns’ quarters and Shiner Catholic School. Originally built in 1892 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the church and school provides important spiritual and educational growth to more than 900 families in the parish family.

Through a relationship with Catholic Mutual Group, the church’s coverage provider, BELFOR Property Restoration was called in to complete the reconstruction and restoration efforts:

  • The church received damage to the steeple roof and cross as well as the interior of the facility. From the ground to the top of the steeple, it is 149 Feet high. It took eight weeks to install the scaffolding. The steeple roof had asbestos roofing materials removed and replaced with a new copper roof, gutters and downspouts.
  • The roof on the nuns’ quarters was also damaged.
  • The school received damage to the roof, multiple classrooms and hardwood flooring. The gym also had window damage.

“This is our parish and its beauty and its history is also ours. There hasn’t been this level of work done at the Church and School for 40 years. We must maintain the legacy of our Parish and school.”
